Great Health Starts with Great Water

I’ve been filtering my water for as long as I can remember.

Long before it was trendy or something you heard about on health podcasts, I knew water quality mattered. While other people were drinking straight from the tap, I was already making sure my family had access to clean, filtered water.

Over the years, I’ve tried so many different filtration methods - some worked well, others had serious drawbacks. But one thing I’ve never wavered on is this: Great health starts with great water.

If you’re focusing on good food, good supplements, and good sleep but you’re still drinking unfiltered, low-quality water, you’re missing one of the most foundational pieces of true health.

Let’s talk about why hydration is critical, why not all water is created equal, and how to make sure you’re drinking the best water for your body.

Why Water Matters More Than You Think

You probably already know that staying hydrated is important, but let’s look at why it’s absolutely essential for overall health.

Water fuels every cell in your body – It allows nutrients to travel, toxins to flush out, and digestion to function properly.
Hydration boosts energy & mental clarity – Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, brain fog, and sluggish digestion.
Water supports immune function – Your body fights off illness more effectively when properly hydrated.
Water keeps your skin, joints, and organs healthy – It plays a major role in hormone balance, detoxification, and overall well-being.

But here’s the catch - not all water is the same.

Drinking more water is great, but if you’re consuming contaminated, chemical-laden, or plastic-tainted water, you’re actually working against your health instead of supporting it.

So what should you be drinking?

Drink More of This for True Hydration

You probably already know what not to drink - sodas, artificial sweeteners, sugary drinks. But what should you be drinking more of to truly nourish and hydrate your body?

Mineral-rich, filtered water – Your body thrives on clean, structured water that retains essential minerals.
Herbal teas – Hydrating and nourishing, teas can offer additional immune and digestive support.
Nutrient-dense broths – Bone broth and mineral broths are fantastic for hydration and electrolyte balance.
Homemade electrolyte drinks – Natural ways to replenish electrolytes without artificial ingredients.

What you drink from matters, too. Choose glass or stainless steel whenever possible to avoid chemicals leaching from plastic.

Why You Should Be Filtering Your Water

When I started researching what’s actually in our tap water, I was shocked. Municipal water might look clean, but at the microscopic level, it’s often full of contaminants.

Here’s why every family should be filtering their water:

PFAS aka "Forever Chemicals" – Linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and immune suppression. These chemicals don’t break down in the environment or the body, which is why they’re often called "forever chemicals." They’re in drinking water across the U.S., and many people have no idea they’re consuming them.

Microplastics – Found in over 90% of tap and bottled water, disrupting hormones and gut health.
Chlorine & Disinfection Byproducts – Used to treat water but can have long-term health effects.
Heavy Metals like Lead, Mercury & Arsenic – Can leach into water from pipes, affecting neurological and developmental health.
Pharmaceutical Residues – Traces of medications (antibiotics, birth control, antidepressants) have been detected in municipal water.
Fluoride – Still controversial due to its effects on the thyroid and neurological development.

Municipal water treatment was never designed to remove all these contaminants. That means it’s up to us to make sure our families are drinking clean, safe water.

What Are Your Water Filtration Options?

Not all water filters are created equal. Many don’t remove the worst contaminants, or they have major downsides. Let’s break them down:

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems – Removes most contaminants but also strips out essential minerals.
I used RO water when my boys were little, thinking it was the best choice. But after years of drinking it, I noticed their teeth were suffering. Reverse Osmosis takes out everything, including the beneficial minerals our bodies need. If you’re drinking RO water, it’s essential to remineralize it before drinking.
Distilled Water – Similar to RO, it removes everything - including electrolytes and minerals your body needs.
Pitcher Filters (Brita, PUR, etc.) – Only reduce basic contaminants like chlorine but don’t remove PFAS, microplastics, or heavy metals. Not to mention, the water then sits in a plastic container before you drink it!
Refrigerator Water Filters – Minimal filtration, often not strong enough to remove the worst chemicals.

So what’s the best option?

Why I Use & Recommend Boroux Water Filters

After years of research and trying different systems, Boroux is my top choice for water filtration.

Removes harmful contaminants while keeping beneficial minerals intact – Unlike RO or distilled water, Boroux leaves your water balanced and nourishing.
Effectively filters out PFAS, microplastics, chlorine, and heavy metals – This means cleaner, safer water for your family.
Easy to use and maintain – No complicated plumbing or expensive maintenance.
High-quality, sustainable design – Boroux uses stainless steel, not plastic, so you don’t have to worry about your clean water being stored in plastic.

If you loved Berkey filters, Boroux is the perfect replacement. These filters work just as effectively as Berkey filters did - removing contaminants and delivering clean, mineral-rich water.
