BEFORE THE BABY COMES, letβs discuss after the baby comes! The postpartum days and weeks are by far the most ignored topic for first parents, which becomes the most commonly expressed regret. HINT: Itβs VERY hard to learn new concepts and take in new information when you are sleep deprived, when your baby is noisy and needy, and you are perhaps still in pain and recovering. My midwife families and I are discussing postpartum needs and plans throughout their entire year! And then they marvel at how much smoother their pp is compared to others. Remember, while the birth is just a day or two, parenting never ends!
This is an essential appointment (or class topic) for pretty much every single family, as a true understanding of mother-babyβs postpartum needs has been generationally lost here in the US. Unfortunately, most hospitals tell mothers to βresume normal activitiesβ upon arriving back home with their newborn! WRONG!
Below are some ideas of the topics you may wish to cover.
Β· What your baby is expecting in the first hours, days and weeks after birth
Β· What you need to know about post-partum before you are in it
Β· Helping your bottom feel better
Β· If you have a caesarean delivery
Β· Why keeping your baby warm in the right way is a complete game-changer
Β· What to tell the grandparents
Β· The really important thing your pediatrician will miss
Β· The breastfeeding tricks that mothers LOVE
Β· Making more milk (if you need to)
Β· The cure for getting babies βback to birth weightβ
Β· How to ask for help
Β· The 4 things in your control to lower risk of post-partum depression
Β· Bethβs list of parenting books and resources
Β· The midwifeβs check-list of postpartum essentials to have on hand
